The photo on the cover shows the author, Dr. Victor Westphall as a Navy ensign, a few months before he left for duty in the South Pacific during World War II. Standing beside him dressed in a youth's military uniform is his older son, David Westphall. He was three years old at the time of the photograph.
David was killed in action in Vietnam on May 22, 1968 at the age of 28 while serving as a 1st Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps.
